It also helps in avoiding procrastination. To be able to manage your time successfully the management of enterprises should set up goods which needs to be prioritized in order to know which tasks need to be completed at what time. The planned schedule should always be changed to match the changing activities and also prioritize the activities. Prioritizing enables the completion of tasks at the time they are required. In order to achieve good time management one need not to multitask because it will consume a lot of time. Once you have the timetable it should be followed as it appears hence avoiding skipping of activities which have already been scheduled for. People who do not manage their time thus lacking a time management plan suffer from insomnia, deteriorating health and other discomforting issues. They may even be divorced by their spouses because they do not spend time with them. Effects of poor time management affect not only you but also people around you. Time management reduces cost as the saying goes that time is money. It allows you to use the minimum costs possible in every activity that one may go through. It helps reduce the anxious nature of being when they have not done their tasks accordingly. Time management enhances discipline and efficiency in terms of completing the tasks at hand. Instruments of data collection Data collection is the gathering of information to which will offer critical evaluation to the research questions. They are many and are chosen depending of their validity and reliability. This according to http://ohoiline.osu.edu/b868/pdf/b868.pdf The methods which one has chosen should offer the best answer to the research questions. Also in selecting the data collection procedures or methods one need to consider how the information gathered will be organized, analyzed as well as interpreted. The gathered information should be reported to the various audiences. The research study will utilize the following data collection procedures. a. Face to Face interviews This is oral administration of an interview schedule. To obtain accurate information a researcher needs to establish friendly relationships between the respondent prior to conduct on interview. The face to face interview will be administered because of the following: 1. They provide in depth data, which cannot be collected by use of questionnaires. 2. It will be possible to obtain data required to meet the objectives of the research study. 3. They are flexible because they allow follow up of an aspect as it gets raised in the course of the interview. 4. They guard against confusing questions because they give a room for clarification. b. Questionnaires It is a list of questions that will be asked to the respondents in order to get the desired data. They may be structured or unstructured. They will be used in this research study because: 1. They are easy to administer. 2. They are economical in terms of money. 3. Their responses may give an insight to the background motivation, feelings and interests. c. Observation Observation is where by the researcher utilizes check list and records what he/she observes during data collection. The researcher in this case observes the behavior and how it occurs. Observation will be used in this research study because: 1. It enhances accuracy because the researcher himself or herself observes what exactly happens and does not depend on what the respondent has to say. 2. Observation can be used alongside other instruments or procedures of collecting data e.g. Interviews. 3. It can be done repeatedly thus increasing its level of accuracy. Reliability and validity of the research instruments According to http://www.nova.edu/ssss/QR/QR8-4/golafshani.pdf reliability and validity have got their roots in positivist perspective. Reliability of instruments in data collection determines the appropriateness of the research instruments for particular study. It tells how well the instruments managed or failed to measure what they were supposed to measure. To test the reliability of the instruments, the research study will conduct a pretest study where the original interview schedules, questionnaires and observation schedules will be administered to selected persons in the sample. Validity ensures that what an instrument claims to measure has been measured. To ensure that the instruments are valid advice will be sought to experts in the area. Based on the comments that will be given as well as guidelines adjustments will be made before the final version of the interview schedule, questionnaire and observation schedule will be administered. Population of the Study The population of the study will be call centre workers in two telecommunication industries. Since they are many and it will take a lot of time to access and study them, they will be randomly selected using simple random sampling technique to obtain a number of 90 respondents only. From this sample data will be collected to help answer the questions addressed by the research study. Simple random sampling technique will be chosen because it ensures that the population is representative. Data Analysis The data that will be collected will be analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. This is because descriptive statistics will help in summarizing the data while the inferential statistics will help infer the sample results to the general population of the study. Organization of the study Chapter One In chapter one the research study will explain the context of the problem in details and give a detailed statement of the problem that the research study will deal with. The objectives, purpose, research questions, sub questions and the hypotheses will be stated clearly. The scope that the research study will cover will be stated together with the limitations that will be encountered during the research study. Chapter Two The second chapter will deal with literature review where by literature that is related to the research study will be à evaluated to give various trends that may exist which will be helpful in the research study. Chapter Three It will basically deal with the methodology of the research study. It will deal with the research design the research study will utilize, instruments of data collection together with their validity and reliability. The population that the research study will utilize will be discussed and how the data collected will be analyzed. Chapter Four It will deal with data presentation and interpretation. It will include analysis of the data which have been collected and how it will be presented. It will also include how the collected will be interpreted for the audience to be able two understand. Chapter Five This chapter will include with the conclusions that will be drawn from the study. The population of study will be representative to allow for the generalizations to be drawn from it be inferred to the whole population. SWOT ANALYSIS Strength Long Establishment Long establishment is one of the strength of MCB over private banks. Due to this it earn a name in the market, The biggest Infrastructure MCB has the biggest infrastructure among the entire private bank. So it is making business from one corner of the country to another corner of the country. Other factors are: Brand image because of Muslim word in the name in an Islamic country. In a growing economy of Pakistan. Has strong market presence. Mainly operating by Mansha Group. Offers a wide variety of services to its customer and has a customer bank of round about 4 million. The bank has efficient IT infrastructure and network of online services. MCB is working in Pakistan over 60 years of success. MCB fall under the big 5 domestic banks of Pakistan. Bank is continuously focusing on developing new and innovative products to attract the target market. Asset utilization is very good. GPRS enable banking. Weaknesses In the changing environment where MCB has some strength it has some weaknesses also, some of the weak factors are; None Professional staff MCB keeps non professional staff even on higher post who is promoted from the typist and clerical area after a long time. Nationalization Effect When MCB was nationalized by BHUTTOs Govt. it was the glooming period of MCB. During that period, MCB suffered a lot. Govt. Influence Non-professional and bureaucratic people were placed at the top mgt level who knows nothing about the banking and they damage the repute of the bank in the markets as well. Lack of dynamism When a newly person employed in the bank they want to leave the bank very soon. Because the promotion period of the bank is so late till you retire. So lake at dynamism comes to the personality. He is no further creative in his life. So increasing age of the staff is one of the weaknesses of the bank because banks needs young and creative person who have the ability to meet the changing response of the environment. Advances to non productive units During the nationalized period, a lot of amounts are forwarded to the non productive unit just on political bases. Most of the advances are not still paid and not even written off. Other factors are: Political instability Internal political issues Less job satisfaction of employees. Customers facing problems of NADRA verification while opening their accounts because its process is time consuming. To give everyone equal protocol is lacking among employees customers having account with small amount and not giving same services like dealing to others who have high account. Lack of organizational loyalty among employees. Promotion is generally on seniority bases. External Environment Opportunity Having an edge over the other commercial banks, MCB has greater profit, greater growth rate and market share than other commercial banks. Privatization After privatization bank deposits has accelerated tremendous speed because it gave the opportunity to get rid of critical influences and to put the bank on the professional root. Other factors are: To go global Low exposure to consumer banking providing opportunity to explore the segment. Emergence of Islamic banking in the country and MCB is increasing its Islamic banking operations. SBP police to allow Islamic banking business separately. Free staff training facilities offered. Greater profitability can be achieved through strong internal control. Elimination of risk of fraud through professional training. Opportunity to open a branch in rural area to increase its branch network and gain more profit. New schemes for deposit and finances should be introduced regularly. Threats Private Banks Like citi bank and ABN amro are entering in the market with a greater power and strength in terms of brand name. Govt. Policies MCB faces the great threat from the Govt. policies like as finance the non productive units housing etc. so the bank does not feel the freedom in operating on its own view point, which is a threat for the bank. Because the bank is purely commercial so it should have autonomy to make its own decisions. Other factors are: Increasing competition in banking sector of Pakistan. Strong competition. Rising deposit rates. Foreign banks in the market having more marketing budget. People losing trust in banks. Participation of foreign banks in local market that can hurt the market share. Restructuring of privatized banks. PEST ANALYSIS Political Political instability in Pakistan can lead to changes in laws and policies which can be in favor or against the banking sector. Economic Economy of Pakistan is facing issues about employment, inflation, illiteracy, which hinder business growth. Social Cultural issues can be there but still as there are multinational companies there, therefore, cultural issues are not prominent. Technology People are highly skilled and MCB can introduce new technology to increase competencies. Porters Model The basis of much of the thinking on competitive advantage has been the writing of Michael Porter. Porter in his book COMPETITVE STRATEGY: techniques for analyzing industries and competitors (1980) introduced his model of competitive rivalry. Competitor rivalries are: Competitive rivalry Threat of potential new entrant to the sector Threat of substitution product or services to the existing trade The Bargaining power of buyers The Bargaining power of suppliers Threat of potential entrants Competitive Rivalry Bargaining power of buyer Bargaining power of supplier Threat of substitution Threat of New Entrants The threat of new entrant relates to the ease with which a company can enter a given trade sector. Barrier to entry into a particular market include the need for capital, knowledge and skills. The barrier to entry, for example, in banking industry if a bank is working in particular area where any other bank is exist or any other branch is exist in the same city. Then the competition is exit and threat is exist for the bank that already exists. With the entrants of competitor your business is really suffer to overcome their competitor you have to introduce new strategies and make plans. IT can be a barrier to enter to a given market place. Existing players in the sector may well have a substantial in IS / IT, including for instance the use of EDI to co ordinate their supply chain. This experience and investment can be difficult for the new entrant to match. The converse is that development in IT and e- commerce may leave existing players with a heavy investment in expensive, old technologies giving the new entrants the opportunities to enter the market with fresh ideas and a business plan facilitated by a new generation of IT provision. Internet e- commerce is a technology that can facilitate new entrants to existing markets without the need to match the IT and infrastructure investment of the existing players. Threat of Substitution Substitution is a threat to existing players where a new product becomes available that supplies the same function as the existing product or services. If we take the examples of banks if any commercial bank is not providing good services to their customers are not giving proper care to the customers then the customers go for the substitute where they find good services and where bank provide or give values to their customer as a priority. The IT industry has itself substitute many products previously used in business with the replacement of the typewriter by the word processor being but one example of the e- commerce technologies, internet e- commerce has the potential to make significant inroads in the traditional retail sector with online banking. Bargaining power of Buyers For a business to be profitable the cost of producing and distributing its product has to be less then price it can fetch in the market place. Where there are a number of competitors in the market or the surplus of supply the buyer is in a strong position to bargain for a low price and for other favorable conditions of trade. Over recent years the large retail chains have developed a strong bargaining position. The bargaining strength of the buyer is of least threat to the low cost producer that organization can agree to tight terms of trade that competitor firms could not profitably match. The other defence is to have a branded product that the store will feel obliged to stock because their customers expect it. Bargaining power of suppliers The organization whilst trying to get an adequate price from its buyers will be looking to get favorable terms from its own suppliers. The organizations ability to get a good deal is the mirror image of its positions with the buyers. If the supply is plentiful or there are several suppliers it should get a good price. If the product is scarce or the number of suppliers that are able to meet its needs is limited then the supplier is in a more favorable position. Competition between Existing Players The final force is the competition between existing players in the market. The competition is to get the buyers and to trade at a price that produces an acceptable profit. That competition is won on the basis of the generic competition advantage of price, differentiation or focus. The competitive position of each organization is determined in part as least by the deal it is able to make with its suppliers. The competitive position of each organization is not absolute; in most markets the factors that lead to a successful deal in one place at a given time will not necessarily be replicated in the next bargain that is to b struck. Impacts of E- Business Following are the impacts that E- business have o the bank: New sales channel Cost leadership Reduced entry cost New opportunities Information System Efficient quality controlling Easy fraud detection in transaction Easy data saving Easy data recovery Easy management of business transaction New sales channel E- Business is the new way of sale channel in the market. C:UsersTahirDesktopmarketing.jpg C:UsersTahirDesktopresearch2.jpg Cost Leader Ship Cost leadership is a concept used in business strategy and it is developed by Michael Porter. It describes the competitive advantage in the firm. Cost leadership means reducing the cost of operation in the industry. The cost leadership is often determined by company efficiency, size, scale, scope, and cumulative experience. A cost leadership means to increase the level of production well defined scope and other economics and producing high quality products by using high technologies. In the last few years many companies used strategy mix to achieve market leadership. Companies that wish to follow the cost leadership strategy must maintain constant efforts to reduce the cost. Cost reduction strategies include: Establishing tight control of production Minimize the cost of sale Like the multinational bank MCB launched their online services like mobile banking. This is launched to reduce the luxuries and to introduce the branch less banking that mean it reduce the cost of branches for example if they remove the branches that mean saving of cost in term of removing employees and cost of electricity and many other expenses of branches. C:UsersTahirDesktophourglass-703070.jpg Reduced Entry Cost Reduced Cost of entry means introduce the new product to the market. Cost of entry includes the cost of all research, development, production, testing, marketing, advertising and distribution of the new product. Developing a website is reduced all these cost because internet provide you an easy access to every information so if you want to increase the production capacity you can find the new production techniques on the net. And you can adopt that according to your need. If we take advertising websites and online other sources like newspapers, magazines reduced the cost of advertising very much. In traditional way of doing advertising like print the papers and join the local media this will charge you high cost at limited area coverage. But the internet is away that give you an opportunity to advertise the product on a larger scale. If we talk
Strategic Change Management At Marks And Spencer Business Essay
Strategic Change Management At Marks And Spencer Business Essay Marks and Spencer is one of the leading foods and non food items retailer almost all over the world and its mission is to provide excellent quality to their customers. It has long heritage of excellent service and product and successful stories of business. These days they have faced some great extend of competition from their competitors such as competitive price strategy and use of excellent market tools and new fashion at low cost prices. In this report we will discuss the need of change that Marks and Spencer would required in organization. Background of Change: These days companies are focus to increase their product line and market their process by using of effective marketing tools for example 4ps for example Tesco is the one of the biggest retailer in the UK and currently having more than 2500 line of products in their store and they are increasing their products day by day because they want to retain their old customers as well as they want to attract new customers, for this purpose they have strong RD Team that helps them to know that what would be the competitive product and they not only took initiative but also start their specific group researched to improve their existing product. Mean while the whole process is monitored by upper management level and they use right place, right process and right product for the right people and increase their sales level with the slogan of Every little help. This is very effective strategy to show the whole process by saying that that they are only helping their customers. The need of above example is the main key process of their RD team is that they review their whole process again and again to make their decision and products better and implement changes on urgency basis. Before discussing the need of change in Marks and Spencer I will discuss and model for changes which are these: Kotters Model for Change Kotters Model for Change: Change is a process that need to be placed compulsory in each and every organization these days after certain period, these changed could be in management level or labour level, but the important thing that this change should be implemented successfully to gain the same level or more then the old level of satisfaction or profit. In Harvard Business School Korter introduced the eight step of model of change that help organization to implement the desired change successfully and carefully and also on urgent basis. (Mind Tools, 2011) He mentioned that changes that organization need in the presence of their competitors are most quick so thats why employees should accept the change to help the org. to lead in market with quick decision. Step no. 1: Need of Urgency: As we have discussed above that company needs a quick change to lead in the market with competitive skills and products and with competitive decisions. Now we will see its importance with an example of Marks and Spencer, suppose its competitor ASDA introduces a discount of 10% bread and butter together, now the very next morning it is the challenging situation for Marks and Spencer to retain their customers before opening hour they have to call the meeting on urgent basis and plan the change in their strategy because of the competitors actions, they introduce loyalty scheme that who buys bread and butter will get double club card point that will help to retain the customers and their profit will remain same, but afterwards they need to make it sure that this one decision is implement in all their branches in UK to protect the confidence of the customers. This is call urgency need of change. To implement these skills and situation MS would need to: Analyse their employees potential of learning and their knowledge skills that how active they are towards any change Allow the room and time to employees to find out the need of business by doing SWOT analysis and made them aware that how quick they should be in term of change When management take the decision from employees than employees would know and will assess the upcoming change and will be ready to adopt it. Step no 2: Strong Coalition: Implementation of change without strong leadership means having a profit without investments in retail industry. We can measure the importance of change without leader in our daily lives. According to Korter team work of organization towards change leads to success. For that purpose Marks and Spencer must follow these points: Take a feed back from employees about the progress of the leader Do external audit to know the influence of leader on their employees Hire new strong leader to implement the changes on urgent basis Step 3: Change in Goals and Mission: Every organization do practice and do internal audit to make sure that their employees are working with the knowledge of their path that leads to common mission and objectives. According to Korter in case of change in organization goals and mission they must remember these new approaches to their employees. (Value Based, 2010) They can do in the following format: Use of few words and post it inside the organization on small distances Do the seminars with the general public and with employees to show your progress and the care companys for customers and their employees Use of these words in common speeches in mid term reports, etc. Step no. 4: Regular discussion and communication of vision and mission: As we have discussed before that the need of the management is to do practice of remembering of common vision and mission among their employees to let them know their duties and any new changes. Step no. 5: Remove Obstacles: As we have discussed the korters need of urgency at start they also focused that if they found any obstacle in reviewing process it must be removed urgently. Step no 6: Short Term Wins: Management while remembering the vision among employees should appreciate every little effort of employees to made them perfect and efficient in their own tasks. This would help the other employees to be motivated. (The leader ship hub, 2011) Step no 7: Build the Change Continuously: This step defines that company need to be productive and should not stop after certain level of change but regularly should analyse the market situation. Step no 8: Relation with companys culture: Company such as Marks and Spencer should always relate the change ideas and strategized with the company environment and with its current cultures. Change in Marks and Spencer: In recent research it is found that MS having low level of sales due to their extra expenses on non related items like according to MS they spent 2m pounds in partnership with Oxfam to collect the old unused cloths and for stopping land filling. This strategy also market on their websites and on different paid place these activities got lot of amount and did give back nothing in term of financial to stake holders. Before implementing these kinds of strategies it is necessary to measure the benefit of key stake holders. (Marks and Spencer, 2010) Initially they attract 1200 of people on their web site in one moth by saying that they will award a sum of amount who would give the most productive idea to protect the environment but this activity to invite them didnt give them as such because they were more focused towards other activities than introducing new styles and products. Need of Change in Specific Areas: As we have discussed the reason that why they need change that is first of all the over spent on the advertising and second thing is that the focus of the management towards companies goal and mission and third is increasing the product line. These factors are not only focused on companys strategies but if we discuss the same factors with the companys objective we must ensure the quality of whole process to let every employees know the importance and values of companys mission. With the relation of all above discussion now I will discuss the exact main root of change that what are the places needed change? Factors of need of change: Below are the main root that causes the disturbance and these factors need to become changed in Marks and Spencer: Unclear goals of MS among the employees Extra spending and attention of extra curricular activities Low number of product line Increase new style fashion Regular reviewing and monitoring process (Internal Audit) These are the few points that must be implementing in Marks and Spencer to accomplish its old mission statement. Change in Management Activities: As we have discussed that the main problem in marks and Spencer is that their vision towards their business activities is not clear they are focus to treat other activities as their own business activities such as they joined their hand with Oxfam a charity organization and have started campaign to collect the unusable cloths to stop land filling and reselling them with the help of Oxfam. Actually they have distracted from their actual work its not due to some employees activity but this action is being decided and taken by upper level of management. Now the change is needed in that area to recover the absence and demage to business brand value to complete their uncompleted short term goals to achieve long term goals on decided time until 2020. Application of Kotters Model: Here kotters first step of model of change applies that they needs to create the situation of quick change by considering the current situation of their business as compare to the other competitors they must be able to act as quick as they want to gain the profit from the market businesses. For this they need a strong leadership that would motivate and attract the employees towards the need of urgency because some times employees didnt focus that what they are doing and they didnt adopt the change so it is the responsibility of leader to insist them that change is the compulsory thing that needs to be implement. (mind tools, 2010) Change in Product Line: The change is needed in product line where there are very few fashion products they are presenting as compare to their competitors. BY doing SWOT analysis they would come to know the need of new and innovative product that will help them to retain the old customers and by introducing new styles in non food industry they will attract other new customers as well. (Marks and Spencer) Change in Spending on Extra curricular Activities: They need to change their perception towards the mind capturing of customers until now they understand that the best way to attract the customers is socialise them on their web site and ask them to give new ideas to win the prizes but these ideas were not so popular and still the reason of spending extra money and time on it. Application of Short term Wins: After ensuring the strong leader management need to do a quick review of their planning and find out any barrier that stops their progress towards their goals. After ensuring all tools and techniques than they need to make sure that they are appreciating their employees to get out of them some thing extra to promote their vision and to get the suggestions and new ideas from them. Change in Fashion Products: As we have discussed that they are currently in need to attract the customers by introducing new styles and fashion in garments industry to attract more customers from all around the UK so in that case they would able to become the market leader in short term in the UKs market. Relation with Marks and Spencers Culture: After ensuring that they have removed the barriers and have created short term wins now they need to change the inner environment of MS time by time to get the modern techniques and styles in to their organization. That continuous change would remind the employees to give their on suggestions on their short term wins and with that opinions business would be able to act more quickly towards the change. Key Stake holder at Marks and Spencer: Now we will discuss the importance of stake holders in any organizations and their need in the companies change strategies and their importance in over all business planning. Stake holder means a group of person and companies having direct or in direct relation with the company strategies and they are affected with company decision internally or externally. Suppliers as a key stake holder at MS: Supplier at Marks and Spencer are both food and non food products so while making strategic planning it is crucial to take care of their interest in that policies. Suppliers interest could be increase in number of their order so they would get paid more and taking new orders would increase their productivity and profit. With the consent in change in business strategies of suppliers they would able to provide new products and new ideas on time to the customers on the shop and also on online stores and they would get on time door to door delivery. They also a great impact on environmental by using green factories and transportation while delivering the food and fashion products to the customers at their doors. Board of Directors at Marks and Spencer: Board of Directors are those person who have superior power inside the organization and are holding large number of shares and any nay policies effect their interest more badly or positively. So it is vey important to design the change policy in the way in which BOD can easily identify their short term and long term profit of the organization. Customers of Marks and Spencer: Their are two types of customers who shop from Marks and Spencer that is in shop customers and other type is Online customers in recent annual report according to MS they showed the sales figure in which the total 15% of sale from UK was online based that was the huge amount sold from online resources. Now while doing change in organization it is very important to consider the interest of both type of customers to get the highest level of satisfied customers with increasing number of sales. Government: In some projects govt. is included in the business planning as a stake holder such a charity program that runs nation wide have a great influence of govt. department in it so doing change in policies would effect them badly. So management needs to care their interest as well to protect their long term benefit. Implementation Process of Model of Change in Marks and Spencer: Bow we will discuss the need of change and how they implement it in the organization with consent of all other key stake holders. To understand this process easily I have divided these steps in main five steps such as financial and function level and their sub heads with Kotters models, etc. The implementation is described in table below: Model of Change in Marks and Spencer Levels Definition Starting/Function level Need To made quick decision on Urgent basis Strong leadership that leads to strong team work Process Level Clear vision on all companys objective On regular basis communication with companys employees Structure Level Improve structure level by removing any obstacle Increase the confidence by awarding them on short term achievement Marketing Level Regular working towards change with the help of marketing tools Innovation/Maturity Level Daily revision of old achievements and new targets Progress with practice under supervision Discussion of above Table of application and implementation: In Marks and Spencer company have lot of branches inside the UK to make sure that they all act on policies of change at functional level and process level it is necessary to get their strong leadership on them to bring the new and desired change it is due to the research of Kotters model of change according to him the need of change only could be generated if the team would have strong coalition and strong leadership. Thats why doing SWOT analysis at this level is also important to get rid of barriers at urgency level, other wise whole process would lead to the company towards unsuccessful change and the interest of stake holders would be damaged. Domestic Violence Facts and Myths :: Violence Against Women Essays
In this paper I will be telling you many different forms of domestic violence. I will include the physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, spiritual abuse, economic abuse, social abuse, and emotional abuse. I will also describe the "cycle of violence", teen dating violence, and why women stay with an abusive partner. Physical abuse takes many forms including hitting, punching, pulling hair, slapping, grabbing, biting, kicking, breaking bones, bruising, burning, twisting arms, throwing victims against walls and furniture, throwing objects and using weapons. It also includes damaging household goods, killing pets, and denial of human needs, like sleep and nutrition. Assault can be of a life-threatening nature resulting in broken bones, miscarriages and other serious injuries. A substantial proportion of victims are threatened or assaulted with weapons such as knives, firearms and axes. Physical violence can result in murder and often leads to serious physical injury. The injuries are not always obvious as abusers often make sure the signs of their attacks are hidden under clothing. For many women there is a real and constant threat of death because of the seriousness of the abuse. Sexual abuse in the home is domestic violence. Sexual intercourse without consent is sexual assault. Sexual assault may or may not involve physical force. Sexual abuse is unwanted sexual contact. Many men still believe that they have the right to unlimited sexual access to their wives. Verbal abuse consists of derogatory comments, insults and constant put- downs. Lack of physical attractiveness, inferiority, inability to cope and succeed on her own and being told that she is not a good mother/wife/housekeeper. Over time this constant humiliation will destroy a women's belief in herself and severely affect her self-esteem. She begins to take on the abusive descriptions as if they are real and therefore may start to believe that she's worthless, that the violence is her fault. It must be kept in mind that responsibility for the violence lies solely with the perpetrator, not the victim. Threats are very common form of verbal abuse, aimed at terrorizing the woman to such and extent that the abuser is in total control. Threats by a man to kill a woman if she leaves him are often reported by victims of domestic violence. Emotional abuse closely linked to verbal abuse, these behaviors are also aimed at terrorizing the victim and stripping her of her self-confidence. Behaviors include destroying household/personal property deliberately hurting/injuring/killing domestic pets, deprivation of essential personal

Finding Patriotism :: miscellaneous
Finding Patriotism Taking my English writing instructorââ¬â¢s advice, one day during my lunch break from work; I went on a short trip to Faneuil Hall. This historical building blends in with other red brick buildings in Boston. Therefore, you might pass it by, if it were not for the painted red line representing the Freedom Trail and a statue of Samuel Adams in the middle of the plaza. Before entering the building, one might compare this moment with, as Walker Percy says. "Seeing the canyon is made even more difficult by what the sight- seer does when the moment arrives, when sovereign knower confronts the thing to be known. Instead of looking at it, he photographs it. There is no confrontation at all." (589). This may also explain my expectations of Faneuil Hall, picturing how my friends had described it to me. As Waker Percy would say ââ¬Å"the privileged knowerâ⬠, ââ¬Å" the preformed complexâ⬠. As the pamphlet describes: ââ¬Å"FANEUIL HALL TODAY Into the 20th Century, Faneuil Hall has remained an active and important place for Bostonians. In the early 19th Century the three granite structures of the Quincy Market were built to the east of the Hall. These, along with Faneuil Hallââ¬â¢s market stalls, continued to be Bostonââ¬â¢s wholesale food distribution center until the 1960s. During the 1970s the entire Faneuil Hall area underwent a major renewal, and today the stalls purvey food to the thousands of visitors each day.â⬠Entering the building, I was expecting to see a museum of some sort, but instead I encountered commercialism everywhere. They were selling things from tee shirts of Larry Bird (a famous basketball player), to Babe Ruth (a famous baseball player). It was disappointing to say the least. Does this have some significance to any sightseers who are expecting to see a historical site? It is a place where one should be inspired by what they are expected to find. Again I am inspired to what, as Walker Percy says ââ¬Å"Will this as Walker Percy says ââ¬Å"the sightseer measures his satisfaction by the degree to which the canyon conforms to the preformed complexâ⬠. I then went to the information desk and took a pamphlet, which described Faneuil Hall. I decided to return the following day. Upon further reading the pamphlet, I overlooked the fact that the place had more to offer. The pamphlet describes a meeting room on the second floor and a museum on the third floor.

Apollo 11 Mission
Apollo 11 Mission The Apollo 11 mission was the first man mission to land on the Moon. The Apollo 11 team left Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969 at 13:32UTC. The missionââ¬â¢s team included Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Commander Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene ââ¬Å"Buzzâ⬠Aldrin Jr. After being in orbit for 72 hours, Armstrong and Aldrin climbed into the Lunar Module, named the Eagle, and prepared for their descent to the Lunar surface. The Lunar Module ââ¬Å"Eagleâ⬠consisted of two parts: the descent stage and the ascent stage. The descent stage had the engine used to land on the Moon, four legs, a storage area for experimental gear and a ladder for the crew to climb down to the Moonââ¬â¢s surface. The descent stage module also served as the launch platform for the ascent stage module when it was time to leave the Moonââ¬â¢s surface and reunite with the Command Service Module. The two Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the Moon at 4:18pm EDT on July 20, 1969 at a site called Mare Tranquillitatis. This site was chosen for many factors which included: smoothness, approach, propellant requirements, free return, and slope. The Lunar Module was equipped with cameras that would provided live television coverage of Armstrongââ¬â¢s first steps onto the moon at 10:56pm EDT and proclaimed: ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Mankindâ⬠. At 11:16 p. m. EDT, Buzz Aldrin stepped out of the Lunar Module and joined Neil Armstrong on the Moonââ¬â¢s surface. During the time the astronauts were on the surface of the Moon they collect about forty- seven pounds of Lunar surface materials. This material was collected for later analysis by scientists back on Earth. Armstrong and Aldrin stated in communication with Houston that they notice that the Moons gravity was very different than that on Earth. They had to move slowly by leaping of hopping with both feet to keep their balance. Some of the items the astronauts left on the Moonââ¬â¢s surface were an American flag as a reminder of their accomplishments, a disc that contained 73 messages from around the world, a patch from Apollo 1, medals from Russian cosmonauts, and the U. S. symbol that was an eagle carrying an olive branch. The two astronauts were on the Moon for about 2 hours 30 minutes before successfully connecting back with the command ship. After the successful landing, walking, and return to the command ship, Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin prepared for the trip back to Earth after spending 128 hours in space. The decent to Earth took place on July 24, 1969. The astronauts landed in the Pacific Ocean east of Wake Island 195 ? hours after launch. Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin were than quarantined due to landing on the Moon and also the fear that they may have brought back some undiscovered pathogens while they were there. After a three week long quarantine the astronauts were released. On August 13, 1969 the three astronauts excited to be released were met by crowds of cheering Americans. There were parades to honor the astronauts in cities like New York, Chicago and LA on the same day of their release from quarantine. Apollo 11 mission objective was accomplished. They had safely landed men on the Moon and brought them back to Earth again. This mission made many things possible for the future of space travel and what was to come. Works Cited ââ¬Å"Apollo 11. â⬠Lunar science and exploration. Lunar and Planetary Institute. 26 Sept. 2008 . This website source offered the detailed information of the whole Apollo 11 Mission from the take off to the landing on the Moon and back to Earth again. The specifics of every aspect of the astronaut's activities such as experiments, the first steps, details on the landing sites. There were also a variety of pictures of the Apollo 11 Mission and its crew. I found this site very useful because of the great amount of detailed information about what the astronauts went through and how long it took them to complete this mission. Apollo 11. â⬠Science Channel. Comcast Cable. 99, Rockford. 28 Sept. 2008. During this broadcast you witnessed the Apollo 11 crew member Neil Armstrong making his first steps and the famous words that were spoken ââ¬Å"One small step for man one giant leap for mankind. ââ¬Å"It was amazing to see the actual footage from the original broadcast of the first steps on the Moon. I found it exciting to be transport ed to the actual event in history. Garner, Joe. ââ¬Å"Apollo 11 MAN WALKS ON MOON. â⬠We Interrupt This Broadcast. By Joe Garner, Walter Cronkite and Bill Kurtis. Naperville, IL: Sourcebooks, 1998. 68-72. The area of the book that pertained to Apollo 11 Mission told of the take off from Earth and the close call when landing on the Moon. Many of the details in this book were covered more thoroughly in my other resources. There was only one fact that I obtained from this book that was not mentioned in anything else I had read, that was about the plaque left on the Moon. Weaver, Kenneth F. ââ¬Å"The Flight of Apollo 11. â⬠National Geographic Dec. 1969: 752-87. This article tells of the landing in great detail, the events that took place while on the Moon as well as the technology that was used on Earth and in space for this mission. Also included in this article was how this feet had changed the outlook for the future of space travel for the better and how landing on the Moon and safely returning to Earth. I found this article to be one of the most informative resources I used in writing my paper. Wilford, John N. ââ¬Å"MEN WALK ON THE MOON. â⬠New York Times 21 July 1969: 1-2. This newspaper article told the readers about Armstrong's first steps on the Moon. Also it told of the items collected from the Moon's surface for future scientific experiments back on Earth. Finally the article told of the Presidents words of congratulations and pride in the accomplishments and advancements the astronauts made in the vision of future and in peace for all mankind. The New York Times newspaper article summarized key points of the Apollo 11 Mission which informed millions of people that may have missed the broadcast of the events on July 21,1969. I found this newspaper showed how important the Apollo 11 Mission was to the world and how this event changed history.

Does Technology Corrupt Society
Does technology corrupt society? (By: Gordon Turtle) Does technology corrupt society? Thatââ¬â¢s a commonly asked question. If you think about it, technology helps society more then it harms it. A lot of schools disallow the use of cell phones or laptops unless they are used for school it-self. How would students communicate without them? Through the one hour to an hour and forty five minutes of lunch? What about technology used for medical purposes. Also, technology used for electronics such as computers, lights, etcâ⬠¦ Lastly, technology used for communication, like cell phones, radios, etcâ⬠¦We use technology almost everywhere; we use it for medical to help people get rid of diseases and injuries. It also helps doctors train better, easier, and more efficiently. If we didnââ¬â¢t have technology then we would still be cavemen living in caves with no light, no way of surviving injuries or illnesses. If we didnââ¬â¢t have any medical abilities the human race would ha ve went extinct a long time ago. Technology gave us electricity and electronics. Without technology we wouldnââ¬â¢t have t. v. ââ¬â¢s, toyââ¬â¢s, game systems, etcâ⬠¦ If man evolved without technology then we wouldnââ¬â¢t have come this far, we wouldnââ¬â¢t be as smart as we are now.We also wouldnââ¬â¢t have any way of teaching our children or other kids about how to live life or how to be good responsible adults. Technology also gave us communication devices such as the cellphone, house phone, computers, laptops, etcâ⬠¦ If we didnââ¬â¢t have technology the military would have fast ways of communicating with its soldiers. Without communication we could think we are the only country on earth for all we knew. Communication devices gave us the power to talk to one another from one side of the earth to the other in seconds.Imagine a world without communication. Imagine you had to write a letter and have it read days or even months later, and then having to w ait days or months for a response. Communication devices are one of the most important pieces of technology ever made. Without them we might as well go live in a cave with the few people we know, thinking that you were the only ones that are on the earth. Thatââ¬â¢s why technology doesnââ¬â¢t corrupt society, and that technology is what brought us to where we are today. If you think about it, technology helps society more then it harms it.
